With the fall season now upon us, there are certain pieces that have been waiting patiently in my closet since last fall that I’m itching to incorporate back into my wardrobe: My Zara leopard print ankle booties, my perfect green Gap parka, my comfy oversized Madewell flannel, and my favorite American Apparel beanie (for starters). Besides all of those things, I can’t wait to start breaking out my comfy and “I-wanna-be-chic” menswear pieces. When the weather cools down, I look to the ultimate queen of menswear for inspiration, the one who started it all and made it cool for the girls to pull from the men’s section– Ms. Annie Hall herself.
Annie Hall (played by the amazing Diane Keaton) is the ditzy, lovable, and incredibly stylish leading lady in a classic rom-com starring Woody Allen as the goofy, smart comedian, Alvy, who falls in love with her. If you’ve never seen this hilarious look at the complicated ups and downs of a modern New York City relationship, take a break from the show that you’re obsessively binge-watching this weekend and watch it on Netflix. The movie came out in 1977 and gave women a new It Girl to show them how to make menswear chic, fun, and cool. With the iconic combination of a bowler hat, white button down, men’s tie, vest, and high-waist tan trousers– Annie opened the door to a whole new world of outfit possibilities. Plus, she is a feminist’s hero for her “I’m-a-woman-but-I’m-still-killin’-it-in-men’s-clothes” attitude. Side note: Diane Keaton is now 69 years old and still sports the same look. I don’t know about you, but that’s enough validation for me to keep bringing it back every fall season.
So, cheers to you, Annie Hall/Diane Keaton for making it totally acceptable for me to wear my androgynous men’s coat, black platform oxfords, and oversized white button downs this fall. I may even rock the high-waist trousers...yeah, I’ll definitely rock the high-waist trousers, because in the words of Annie herself, “well, la-di-da!”
