So, lately winter has been hitting us. Hard. I don’t know about all of you, but I usually try to combat this by playing the game of “how many layers can I fit under my coat without ripping a seam” and letting my favorite black American Apparel infinity scarf shamelessly devour my face. Add a beanie and thick gloves to this mix and I’m out the door like *the cold never bothered me anywaaay.”
Another thing that makes my heart happy during these negative-wind chill arctic days is a good ol’ fashion turtleneck. Now, I have to admit, I used to LOATHE the things. I thought they were uncomfortable, strictly for women over the age of 55, and impossible to have a good hair day with. Put your hair up with a turtleneck, look like a librarian. Put your hair down with a turtleneck, have really crazy/fluffy hair.
Then, along came the magical hair tuck, made famous by my current obsession, Leandra Medine, better known as the Man Repeller. If you don’t obsessively follow Medine’s Man Repeller site, take a quick break from my blog post and go start reading it right now. I’m serious. I won’t be offended. I insist. Aside from Medine’s hilarious sense of humor and observant view of life in New York City, she has a fearless attitude when it comes to style which makes for the most innovative and on point outfits ever. After all, she defines a Man Repeller as:
“She who outfits herself in a sartorially offensive mode that may result in repelling members of the opposite sex. Such garments include but are not limited to harem pants, boyfriend jeans, overalls, shoulder pads, full length jumpsuits, jewelry that resembles violent weaponry and clogs.”
She is my spirit animal, no doubt. So, as I was saying before, one of the things I love most that Medine does is her signature hair tuck, which has since become a major trend on the streets and runways alike. The trick is simple (and lifesaving...and makes you look super cool): turtleneck on, hair tucked into said turtleneck, pull a few strands loose, tossle a bit, and you’ve just defeated the turtleneck hair dilemma. Plus, for those of you that want a chic bob look without the commitment, well...you’re welcome! Here I am (on the right) with a #shamelessselfie doin’ the hair tuck trying to be as cool as Leandra Medine (not even possible).
