No longer limited to little girls and cartoon hillbillies, pigtails, or twin tails if you want to be fancy, are climbing up the fashion ladder to full-on validation.
There are a couple ways you can play with this, but here are three of the best options I’ve found:
- Keep it simple and polished with super straight hair tied low. With a clean center part, you can add just about any accessory you like. Tie or clip small bows over the elastic bands for a girly, youthful look. A more refined option would be a thin, beaded headband not unlike the ones shown in Miu Miu’s spring/summer 2016 runway show.
- Skip the hair bands and twist your hair into two braids to have a more casual look. This is an excellent choice for girls with short hair who find the length a little awkward in creating ponytails. In that case, starting the braid from the roots on the side of the head is better than starting with the tail alone. It gives the braid some length and keeps all the hair in place.
- Adding volume might be the easiest way to make pigtails mature and sexy. Tease out your hair at the base then tie low pigtails with loose curls at the ends. For girls with natural volume, you might be able to skip a step by tying your hair tightly then letting it all go from there.

We may not be little girls anymore, but that does not mean that we have to forsake every style our parents imposed on us as children. Some of these styles have major staying power, especially when it comes to hairdos. One of which has reasserted itself in mainstream beauty trends through street fashion and runway. That’s right! We’re going back to pigtails.
You can mix up your beauty look with just about the same effort as creating a ponytail. Whether you want to have a Britney Moment with braids and fluffy hair ties, or you just want to pull the hair out of your face, pigtails might be the look you need. Stand in front of the mirror and play with your hair to find whichever way works best for you and your personal style.
